Reto Mara Development Organization
Activity Reports

Period : June 15 -June 30 2006

Activities:

•  Live, interactive show on the KBC Maasai Radio Service titled, “ Ore Eng'eno Naa Eng'olon
• Meeting with the Executive Director, EcoNews Africa.

Objective/Results/Remarks

•  Ethnicity – Listeners, particularly in the Maa language programme were concerned that the needs of Maasai people living in constituencies mainly dominated by other communities, where, as would be expected the MP is non-Maasai e.g. Kajiado, Isinya, Mai Mahiu, Kitengela, Kibwezi etc fear that their voices will never be heard in the allocation of all the devolved funds. This is an area that in future could stir up ethnic animosities.

•  Majority of Kenyans have heard about CDF but do not know that it is their right, in fact civic duty to participate in prioritizing needs that the funds should be used to address and monitoring its use. There is need for civic education on devolved funds and particularly on how to democratize the local structures involved in implementing CDF projects.

•  Request for support of field visits in the spirit of partnership, to the community radio stations based in Tanzania and Uganda . REMADO identified a rising need among the Maasai people for more civic education and other broadcasts that the current media is not able to adequately cover and its vision is to start a community radio to be based in Transmara district.
